The Colors Menu
Color Depth

First we worked with changing the number of colors followed by creating a CurlyQ image. The image is saved as a GIF, with dithering at 50%.

CurlyQ's

Next we made a graphic using a gradient. We saved it both as a GIF and as a JPG to see the difference file type can have on the image. In this case, we should have saved the image as a JPG, the image on the right.

The next experiment was with changing the color depth on a photo. The first image is the original. In the next row, the image on the left has the colors reduced to 256 and in the image on the right the colors have been decreased to 16.

Color Palettes

To start, we used the same test photo image to change the colors using color palettes in PSP. The one on the left used the Safety palette, which gave us a look like the image when we reduced it to an 8 bit image. The example on the right was colored using the Sunshine.pal 256 color palette.

Next we used one of our own photos to create a color palette, and then used the color palette to colorize another of our photos. The orchid photo on the left was used to create the orchid palette on the right. The original daffodil photo on the left in the second row was then colorized using the orchid palette. The result on the right shows the very subtle pinkish colorizing on the daffodil petals. Other changes are not as noticeable, at least to me.

Having learned how to work with the color palettes, we now made 6 color palettes and then used those palettes to make gradients. What fun this was! I would have liked to have spent more time on this, but guess that I'll just have to wait until I have more time. :)

The first 6 color palette is in shades of blues and mauves. I created it using the photo of the sail boats at sunset. I kind of like the image that was created when the number of colors was reduced to 6. Once my 6 color palette was created I then made the gradient and used it on the sphere.

The second 6 color palette is in shades of browns. I created it using the photo of the Lake Erie sunset. I also like the image that was created when the number of colors was reduced to 6. Once my 6 color palette was created I then made the gradient and used it on the sphere.

Simulating Darkroom Techniques

For this part of the lesson we used a photo of a chipmunk to demonstrate various darkroom techniques that can be achieved with the use of Colors effects in PSP.

For the last part of the photo techniques I used the dahlia image. The original image and the image converted to a negative image are on the first row. (I like the way the negative image turned out!) The solarize and posterized images are on the second row.

Phew! Thank you for the great lesson, but I've finally run out of gas! :)
