| Camera used: Sony Mavica FD-73. Original image - My first full day in Beijing my brother and his wife were still travelling. That morning one of their housekeepers arrived and took me shopping with her to a local market where the Chinese shopped. As with most days there, it was overcast. All of the produce was arranged on the sidewalks by the various farmers. I spotted this little boy and shot his picture, which delighted his mother. Unfortunately, I really didn't know what I was doing with this new camera and now have so many photos that I won't be able to enhance. But some, like this one, will benefit from the treatment by these programs. I've used After Shot, Auto f/x and PSP7. For each of the last three images (AfterShot Quick Fix, Auto f/x and PSP67), I finished the enhancements in PSP7. I did a blur|soften and then applied the unsharp mask with a radius of .75, strength of 50 and clipping of 3. I found that without the softening, the skin had a very rough appearance. While it wasn't the cleanest little face in the world - or all of China, it really wasn't as rough as the enhancements showed. | |
| AfterShot - Manual corrections made. Because of the effects produced on the skin, I did not use the sharpen feature for this image. While I did not adjust the color in this image, the adjustments did produce some reddish areas on the pavement. | |
| AfterShot - automatic Quick Fix adjustment resulted in a bluish overcast. With the additional work in PSP7 this really isn't too bad, but could be brighter. | |
| Auto f/x - automatic adjustment resulted in warmer tones, especially with respect to the skin. While this software isn't once of the ones suggested for use in the class, I had recently purchased it and wanted to experiment with it as well. I found the enhancements here rendered a very accurate and 'warmer' image. | |
| PSP7 - Auto Color Balance: Strength 30, Temperature 6250; Contrast Enhancement: Neutral, Normal, Natural; Clarify: Strength 2; Effects: Blur|Soften; Sharpen|Unsharp Mask - Radius .75, Strength 50, Clipping 3; Automatic Saturation: Bias Normal, Strength Normal, Skin Tones Present. This procedure worked very well though it took a little more work to try out the different setting effects. The skin tones on this one need to be 'warmer' but I was not sure how to do that in PSP7. I had several versions of this image done before this one, but thought this one to be the best of them. The skin is also too rough in appearance and the photo not as 'warm'. This all could be due to the way I've worked with the image. |
